It’s decided- we have funky fresh freshmen. At frosh orientation, ASB had perhaps a little too much fun dressing up in party hats and caution tape to do icebreakers. The frosh were awesome, and accompanied us on our craziness as we did mixers from the shark song to “HEY BURRITO!” I still remember having fun with ASB during my freshman orientation, and I hope that you guys had a great experience as well. For the rest of the Pres girls who didn’t have the chance to have fun at orientation (and for future reference), here are the top ten things ASB wish we knew as frosh:
1. Be nice to Panther. Even though he is slightly old and fat, please respect our mascot and don’t step on him in the hallway. He would appreciate it.
2. Use your planner! The planner has absolutely everything you need, from dates of mixers and mandatory collaborations to guidelines on absence policies and uniform rules. It will be your best friend. Use it. A lot.
3. Don’t worry about getting up an extra hour early to put on makeup. Pres girls love each other for who we are, and there are no boys to impress here! On a similar note…
4. Embrace the lack of testosterone. You will find a significant other, don’t you worry. But in the mean time, love your Pres girls and enjoy school without boys. You can concentrate much better. Really.
5. Get to know your teachers. Our teachers are incredible here, and have so much wisdom and input to offer you. They stay in their classrooms ALL collaboration, just waiting for a student to come in for help! They are always extremely happy to see you and the fact that you’re putting in extra effort.
6. Don’t be afraid of upperclassmen. We are so nice! We love freshman and always want to help you. If you are lost for some reason on Pres’s famously enormous mazelike campus, don’t hesitate to ask someone for directions.
7. Respect the no-cell phone rule. You are in class to learn from your teachers, and you will see your friends at lunch and after school- no need to text them. Plus, the cell phone rule is much harsher this year- three-hour detention and keeping your cell phone over night! Ahhhh!
8. Join a club, team or activity that you are interested in, like theater. Getting involved automatically allows you to meet new people with common interests. The more you put into high school, the more you will get out of it! There is something for everyone here at Pres; whether you like robotics or swimming, there will be something for you.
9. Hallway etiquette 101! Do NOT stop in the middle of the hallway in the morning at any time. That is the only time that the upperclassmen will become slightly annoyed by your presence. If you would like to talk to your friend, slide to the left or right of the hallway cha-cha style so that the hallway flow can commence.
10. Don’t get too happy about the bread! All of the ASB officers think that we gained the freshman fifteen from loving the cafeteria food a little too much. Remember that our wonderful food service also has healthy options, like delicious salads, and also make sure to stay nourished throughout the day! High school takes a lot of brainpower, and you’ll get hungry for sure. And of course, say hi to Apollo as you go through the lunch line.
Non-freshmen, it’s always good to take these to heart as well! We hope that you love the freshman as much as we do.
Love, ASB
